GHB ALERT!!

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has found that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans are at increased risk for alcohol and other drug problems.  Most research indicates that the level of drug and alcohol problems in the gay community is two to three times higher than that of the heterosexual community.

Despite these statistics, there is resistance and denial about Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) abuse in the gay community, and a lack of awareness of the problems associated with AOD abuse.  Few prevention programs are inclusive and sensitive of gay and lesbian culture, and few education materials that specifically target the needs of the g/l/b/t community are available.

Because AOD use is strongly linked to increased risk of HIV, the Midwest AIDS Prevention Project (MAPP) created A.D.A.P.T. (Alcohol and other Drug Abuse Prevention Training) in 1996.    The primary goal of this project is to increase the g/l/b/t population’s knowledge about the link between alcohol and other drug use with AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, family violence, drunk driving fatalities and injuries, and exposure to date rape and other crime, and increase g/l/b/t people’s ability to receive substance abuse services that are sensitive to their specific needs.

The A.D.A.P.T. project uses varied approaches to prevent health and safety problems that result from AOD abuse in the g/l/b/t community:

  • Media Campaign
  • Opinion Leader Trainings for g/l/b/t adults
  • Gay/Lesbian sensitivity trainings for substance abuse counselors and personnel
  • Teen ADAPT:  Opinion Leader Trainings and Media for g/l/b/t youth

In 1998, MAPP received a grant from the Rainbow Endowment to distribute gay/lesbian-targeted substance abuse prevention materials to community organizations throughout the United States.  Over 200 HIV/AIDS organizations, gay/lesbian groups, substance abuse treatment agencies and other organizations across the country will be sent the posters, print advertising and postcards seen here.

MAPP also is offering agencies a training manual to replicate the entire ADAPT project in their g/l/b/t community.  The manual includes information about conducting opinion leader trainings, developing effective resource guides, placing media, and conducting gay sensitivity trainings for substance abuse personnel.  Manuals and additional media materials will be available to agencies at cost.

If you would like to receive MAPP’s media materials or the training manual, please leave mailing information on the ORDER FORM.
