Asians & Friends is a social/support group for gay Asian men and their
friends.
Asians & Friends meets the fourth Wednesday of every month at
the Community Pride Building in Ferndale, located at 429 Livernois
St., one block north of 8 Mile Road. In addition to monthly meetings,
there are monthly social events.
Although there are a number of groups for gay Asians, found mainly
on college campuses and in coastal cities, there was nothing available
to the community at large in Southeast Michigan.
Gay Asian men often assimilate or attempt to blend into the culture
of their Caucasian counterparts. It is no secret that being among
peers and having the opportunity to share feelings and experiences
is important to one's health and well being. Asians & Friends
provides a safe space where gay Asian men can have a sense of belonging
without compromising their cultural identities or integrity.
Since its inception in 1998 as a volunteer social and support organization,
Asians & Friends has operated under the Midwest AIDS Prevention
Project's non-profit 501(c)(3) status and has reported to its board
of directors.
